Semester almost over.

Hurray! Sounds like you've been keeping busy. =)
I'm actually thinking of heading in the graphic arts direction. Have any tips?
Purchase Adobe CS4 and learn everything you can! All the major software in the suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) are indespensible to a graphic designer. Plus they integrate together so nicely. No one seems to be working with QuarkXPpress anymore so I wouldn't bother learning it. Adobe pulled ahead of them several years ago and they just didn't keep up.

Adobe has a color theory website that is phenomenal!!! And I rarely say this about websites. It is called kulur and is so cool I can barely describe it. You can search color palettes based on keywords, create your own color palette based on a varitey of color theory concepts like triads, analogous, or complementary, or upload an image file and create a color palette based on colors identified within the image.

But wait, there's more! Each color mixture is displayed in HSV, RGB, CMYK, LAB and HEX formulas!!! I've used it several times this semester to come up with color combinations for several websites but it can be used for any design project requireing color. No, I do not get paid by Adobe for gushing about this site. But after using color books for so long I'm so glad someone came up with this concept. Enjoy, and try not to spend too much time on the site!

Well, my last comment didn't address my main question, got so excited about kulur I forgot to bring it up. As for going into the graphic arts, what draws you to that field?

I got pulled in after working left brain centric jobs that just didn't fulfill half of my personality. So I broke away and took a job as project/office manager at a graphic design firm. I fell in love and never looked back. Not really a graphic designer myself but loved the arts and thinking that way. But can't leave the left brain behind so married the two together in website design. Using design, art, logic, programming all mashed together. The whole form follows function concept. Using the entire brain to solve a problem in a more holistic manner just speaks to me.

But I also had a love for photography so pursuing that at the same time. Not really for work but more as an artistic hobby. Plus it will definitely complement the website design. Every well designed website has an image on it somewhere.

What area are you interested it?

Thanks for the suggestions! =)
Sounds like I'm starting in the right direction..I don't have the $$ for CS4, but I have CS2 at work. I also use Quark (or as one coworker and I have started to call it FailXPress because it's so buggy) at work. I've gotten the hang of Photoshop, been experimenting here and there with GIMP at home, and looked at Illustrator, but haven't really had the program click for some reason. The transition from Photoshop to Illustrator hasn't been easy.
I was thinking this would be a good field for me because I love creating stuff like collages and other artsy things. I scrapbook. I've started getting interested in photography (it's more of a hobby than a passion). I also realized that if I do this, maybe I can somehow mesh the two other things I really love: music and the great outdoors

Yes, CS4 is expensive. Gotta love the student discount! But it sounds like you already have a jump on the programs. Illustrator is a bit tricky. I have yet to get it myself but will have a class for it in the next year so that will definitely help.

How do you like GIMP? I have been ruminating about downloading it. Have heard both good and bad things about it. I really love that it is open source but have no interest in learning yet another complicated piece of software.

Hope you find your way through to something that meshes your many interests. That has been my quest for my entire adult life. Our society seems so obsessed with getting a 'good' job or having a 'successful' career or in current parlance, a 'recession-proof ' career. Never any mention about a career that is a good fit for your personality, lifestyle, or interests.

Keep up the good fight to finding something that really meshes the varied components of your personality together. Life is just too short to spend time in a career that isn't fulfilling or meaningful (not to insinuate that that is your case, just speaking from my experience).
Glad to know I'm not the only one that's having a hard time transitioning, lol. Once you start learning, you should go lurk around shirt.woot.com and enter a derby! It would be a great way to practice. =)
You should definitely download Gimp. Honestly, once I got a tour of Photoshop and started playing with that, I found Gimp to be really similar. For the most part, I actually like it better. There are more filters, it's easy to use, and there are some tools that I wish Photoshop had that Gimp does (the tools could be in the newer version of Photoshop, I dunno). The only thing I don't really like is the limited number of fonts that come with the program. The good thing is, it's not hard to find out how to add more. Here's what I've done.
Thanks for the encouragement =) I don't want to have some job where I'm not happy with what I'm doing. There's really no point. Monetary wealth doesn't show the true success of any person. I'm glad you're heading in a direction where you're feeling happier about your life path!
Thank you for the encouragement and the beta on GIMP! It is always nice to check with a real human about a new program before downloading it. You have made me more curiouser (is that a word?).

Fonts are such a tricky thing with the copyrights and all. You really have to put money down to get the good ones. I try and make do with what is free but get frustrated. BTW, love your profile quote.
You're welcome! =) I really hope you try out the program. It'll be good for you to get a variety of experience and it's just fun, too.
Ah yes, I forgot about the copyrights on fonts...there are free ones..you just have to look for them. That's not so fun, lol :p
And thanks! I love Calvin and Hobbes :D
